Who Do You Love?

Description

Who Do You Love? is the sixth studio album by the American vocal pop group Glad, released on Greentree Records in 1987, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was recorded by Joe Hardy at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; with band member Ed Nalle, Hardy, as well as Glad, producing and arranging. Digitally mixed by Ed Nalle, Hardy, and Tom Beard at Ardent.

After 15 years of performing, including ten years as recording artists, Glad has become almost more of a concept, a contemporary Christian music icon, than an actual set group of personnel. Kidding aside, this current lineup, featuring founding members Ed and Don Nalle, is one of the strongest yet. Like The Imperials, another veteran band of the sawdust trail, Glad has always tried to reshape its sound and presentation to maintain its relevance to a youthful audience. They are largely successful on ‘Who Do You Love?’; indeed, the tunes penned by Ed Nalle along with various band members and some superb outside contributors are some of the best songs they’ve cut in recent years. Sonically brilliant studio production, off-kilter synth and guitar chords, stacked harmonies, and atomic-powered drum samples make this the band’s most modern-sounding effort. Ed’s voice is still a bit too smooth for this writer’s taste, but bro Don and keyboardist Tom Beard contribute some gruff support, and Ed rises to the challenge of sharing the mic with Kathy Troccoli quite nicely. Biting guitar accents, courtesy of Chris Davis, are heard much more frequently and with a great deal more vigor than on previous albums. And Glad writer-emeritus Bob Kauflin contributes a tune to complete the circle. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, July 1987]
