Description
Get in, I’m Driving is the fifth full-length studio album by the American singer and songwriter Ginny Owens, released on SoulStride Records in September 2011.
It’s easy, frighteningly so, to associate ‘pop music’ merely with the obnoxious hooks that often take centre stage in mainstream music. Ginny, in her Soul Stride Records debut, reminds us that songs can be crafted with both accessibility and integrity. ‘Get In, I’m Driving’ (an attention-grabbing title for a blind singer) is full of subtle arrangements that prefer to show their riches over time rather than flaunt themselves in an instant. As the Mississippi born singer/songwriter has shared, the album came after a difficult season of her life which prompted reflection on the question of what’s really important. The serene passivity of the album answers: a surrender into the care of the sovereign God who is, after all, “driving” everything. Perhaps reflective of this freshly felt security, Ginny allows musical flourishes that have always remained at the periphery of her palette, closer to the centre; she is more jazz and soul then ever. Her bravest moments are the best of the album, such as «Highest Ground» which experiments with dark string sounds as Ginny rhetorically instructs the world to “keep on turning, ’cause it won’t be too long.” Glimpses like these reveal that she hasn’t quite shown us all she’s got yet. Let’s hope that with the support of a label behind her once more, Ginny can regain her large CCM following. [Martin I Smith, Cross Rhythms, September 2011]
