Description
Caught in a Land of Time is the debut album by the American hip-hop duo Freedom of Soul (Peace and DJ Cartoon), released on Brainstorm Artists International in 1991, manufactured and distributed by Word. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic, a division of Sony Music. (After several years of using the Broken imprint, this would be the first album released by Brainstorm Artists International under their own moniker – BAI, or simply Brainstorm.) The album was recorded by Gene Eugene of Adam Again at Mixing Lab A and B in Garden Grove and Neverland in Cerritos, California; and was produced by Chris Cooper, Derek “DJ Cut No Slack” Drew, Peace, and Victor Everett. Mixed by Eugene, Peace, Sup, and Slack at Mixing Lab A.
Following the breakout of hip hop group SFC, FOS was the answer to dusty street hip hop that was prevalent during the early 90’s (De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, et al). Freedom of Soul, along with SFC and Dynamic Twins, were the Native Tongues of Holy Hip-Hop. More introspective than the others, Freedom of Soul had a more mellow vibe but was just as potent lyrically with great production and DJ-ing. Lots of jazz, rock samples and R&B flourishes flow along with the evangelical lyrics that were appropriate during the crack and gang epidemic of that era. Some tracks at the end of the CD run out of gas production wise fall short sonically of being anywhere near the classic PE ‘Fear Of A Black Planet’. Great album cover though with the funky font.
