The Ballpoint Composer

Description

The Ballpoint Composer is the solo debut album by the American hip-hop artist Freddie Bruno of Phonetic Composition and Deepspace5 fame, released on BEC Recordings’ hip-hop imprint Uprok in April 2002, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. The album was produced by Harry Krum with all album interludes produced by Freddie Bruno.

Here is yet another multi-artist collaboration involving the production skills of the prolific Ill Harmonics. There’s a strong Latino guitar vibe throughout the record that sits well with the jazz funk thing that features strong, check out «Updated & Still Hated» and «Comp USA» if you like it basscentric and slick. As Freddie has contributed to Phonetic Composition it’s hardly surprising that this album is stylistically similar in the form of a sharp, pared down sound throughout most of the album. A brill record, Freddie is a name to keep an eye on, an important member of the fast emerging, cutting edge, underground collective. [T A Sutherland, Cross Rhythms, July 2002]
