Brave New World?

Description

Brave New World? is the sole album by the American alternative pop/rock outfit Flock 14 fronted by Tim McAllister, released on Graceland Records in 1987, manufactured and distributed by Graceland. The album was produced by the band’s frontman Timothy McAllister.

Flock 14’s frantic stage shows gained them a large following in their hometown of Portland, Oregon, leading to three record offers. They signed with Blue Collar (a record label which featured bands like Undercover, Adam Again and 441) but the record company folded before recording the album. Singer and songwriter Tim McCallister met executives from Graceland Records while playing at the Cornerstone festival in Chicago, and the Brave New World? record was released with success scoring a Top 10 hit on the CCM rock charts with “Your Eyes.” The band opened for bands like Daniel Amos, Rez and Undercover.

In September 1987, keyboardist Dennis Childers self-released an untitled 5-track demo cassette under the moniker Den S. In 1989 Flock 14 frontman Tim McAllister released another album on Graceland Records, this time with his new band named World Theatre.

‘Brand New World?’ gives a strong indication of where an independent label like Graceland is likely to excel artistically. Flock 14 produces some tasty, enjoyable European-influenced techno-pop with edgy U2 and Depeche Mode-sounding tunes. Even though production is only a half step above demo quality, there is a lot of talent and fun in these grooves. (Available through Spring Arbor distribution.)
