Description
Save the World is the third album by the American singer and songwriter Eric Champion, released by Home Sweet Home Records in 1992 with exclusive license and distribution by Myrrh Records, a division of Word. The album was produced by Eric Champion for Chris Christian Productions.
Eric Champion’s voice still evokes youthfulness – however, his songwriting, and the agenda behind it, is rapidly maturing. Though the “slippery slope” mentality of «Politics of Compassion» sounds a trifle harsh, Champion’s tempered zeal in the title cut and «New Crusade» solidify his soul-saving, world saving intentions with better beat work than ever. His ballads, here kept to «Calling U» (God, that is) and «Send Them Your Love», brim with more whiteboy soulfulness than previous downtempo turns, too.
There’s more variety in the grooves overall, besides. With 13 self-produced cuts, a little repetition occurs, but stand-outs include the housey «Relivin’ Life», the flute-tinged bubliness of «Smilin’» and «Can’t Get Away»’s hi-NRG disco approach. The closing «Tuffin’ Up» is fun bleep-crazy techno, though it shows up his penchant for rapping silly (in the «Funky Drummer»-vibed «Rainbow Jam», he just about comes correct, though).
So, give Champion his due. After all, he is out to ‘Save the World’. [Jamie Lee Rake, CCM, October 1992]
