The Hidden Face of God is a studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Card, released on Discovery House Music in April 2006.
Card is a thinker, and his records and books are the means by which he offers his thoughts for public consumption. His records tend to be themed, and this 11-track, 40-minute enhanced CD offering (devotionals included) is all about laments and lamenting. It is his assertion here that when we are suffering what we need is not the granting of our specific request (“Take this away, Lord”), but rather to see more clearly the hidden face of God and to sense more strongly his presence. Card provides the majority of lead vocals and plays a host of stringed instruments through this collection of songs that unpack, explore and develop this theme in his typically folk/acoustic style. Arrangements are simple and uncluttered and textures are varied as lead vocal with occasional choir support carry the words. It is a feat to make a record about lamenting and sorrow uplifting, but Card manages that here. Never straying into self pity, the lyrics and music come together beautifully to provide much to absorb and consider and ultimately be thankful for. [Doug Holland, Cross Rhythms, October 2006]
