Grover Levy

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American singer and songwriter Grover Levy was released on Myrrh Records in 1995, a division of Word. The album was produced by Jeff Borders for RBI Productions.

Aside from the fact that his name does not exactly lend itself to rock ‘n’ roll legend, this schoolteacher turned singer-songwriter has crafted a very enjoyable debut. The stripped-down, acoustic-based production embellishes Levy’s original guitar/voice demos without burying his modest messages. When he cranks things up, you can hear a bit of John Mellencamp, and when the band scales the sound back to a slightly lower volume, you may detect the influence of The Beatles. Levy’s songs are direct, emotional and from the gut; however, his lyrics occasionally receive some “apple polishing” from, among others, producer Jeff Borders and Borders’ wife Gayla, as well as Phil Madeira. One particularly inspiring track on which the producer and artist team up is «Someday», inspired by Levy’s former “day job” teaching children from 27 different countries. The first two lines of the song outline its simple premise – “We all are people of color/ We all come from the same blood;” a children’s chorus echoes that theme with the phrase “Someday we’ll live as one… someday can be today.” Levy seems equally at ease writing about universal truths or more personal matters (“My tongue has often called upon Your name/ But too often only out of selfish gain”); that lyrical faciltiy makes him an artist worth keeping an eye on.
