Psycho Theo Socio Ghetto Pathic (The Escape)

Description

PsychoTheoSocioGhettoPathic (The Escape) is the fourth album by the American hip-hop group E.T.W. (a.k.a. End Time Warriors), released on ForeFont Records in 1995. The album was produced by Mike Hill with associate producer Tedd T. Additional production by Elroy Forbes. Mixed by Garod Chuck Zwicky, David Zaffiro, Mike Hill, and Tedd T.

“End Time Warriors make a great album this late into its career?” Well, pass yours truly that plate of crow because E.T.W.’s fourth album, ‘PsychoTheoSocioGhettoPathic’, not only has one of the most elongated titles in recent memory but is a mature, diverse and thoughtful effort that any rap crew would be glad to call its own.

Credit the group’s own self-production and a fulfillment of the same lyrical vantage point that began on last year’s ‘Let’s Stay Together‘ for the giant leap in quality. Here that vantage point manifests as unflinching vignettes of urban reality’s harsher side leavened with enough non-preachy good times to make it livable.

Between the lines, though clearly, Christianity is presented as truth for tough times in numbers like «Elevate Your Mind» and «Be a Man». The fallen reality that makes true faith imperative is presented harrowingly in «Ain’t Nobody Dying But Us» and guest female duo I.N.S. via «Droopin’ Clips». Even when E.T.W. points to more doctrine, as on «Open Your Heart», the flow is more natural and genuine to make it naturally conversational.

Lest anybody think ‘Pathic’ is all grimness, the guys flip the script with a joyous ode to their girlfriends and/or wives on «You’re the One» and get straight-up party mode for a grin-a-thon like «Yea Yea Yea».

Be they happy or bitingly sarcastic and forewarning like they get on the de facto title track, «Abstract Reality», ‘PsychoTheoSocioGhettoPathic’ is a treasure for heads needing to nod and feet that got to dance. A sweet surprise, for sure. [Jamie Lee Rake, CCM, December 1995]

A long awaited album from ETW who have been producing quality hip hop for many a year. Since their self-produced album ‘Let’s Stay Together‘ in 1993, Alliance remixed the single releases and now they’re back, with a Coolio meets TLC sounding journey into gangsta style rap. To my ears, this is a delight. In terms of musical quality, this is one of the most secular sounding releases I have ever heard. A full hour of hip hop bliss. The production is top notch and the lyrics? “Now I believe the Church is tryin’ to do its best/ But we gotta kill wack philosophies and put that pride to rest/ Let our mentalities rearrange to some it may be strange/ To let God be God for a change.” ETW speak to Christians in «Let The Truth Set You Free», gangsters in «Ain’t Nobody Dyin’ But Us» and men in «Be A Man». If you can stick the Americanisms, this will be in the hi fi for ages. I cannot recommend this highly enough. [Matt Parker, Cross Rhythms, December 1996]
