Bully

Description

Bully is the sophomore album by the American DJ, songwriter, and producer Dr. Onionskin (Shane Ries), released on N-Soul Records in 1997, distributed in the US by Diamante Music Group.

Dr Onionskin’s first album contained mostly instrumental acid jazz. This, his second, keeps the jazz influence, but marries it with frantic drum ‘n’ bass rhythms, weird futuristic sounds and a large variety of short vocal samples. «Touched», the opening number, is full of jazzy sax and keyboard riffs with robotic vocal phrases, moving at over 160bpm. «FJR» is very funky, «Universal» has a wonderful squelchy bass line, «ABCs» contains a mad flute sample, and «Latin King» has a lively samba/d’n’b feel to it! There is very little spiritual content to the words used in the vocal samples, but the music of this virtually instrumental project remains interesting throughout (though novices to drum ‘n’ bass may find it tiring). It’s less smooth than the d’n’b of Trip or Faith Massive, but it is more experimental and diverse. Production quality is good and the music breaks new ground in the Christian scene.
