Description
The Power is the seventh studio album by the American singer and songwriter Don Francisco, released on StarSong Records in 1987, distributed by Sparrow/StarSong Distribution. Also released in the UK by StarSong, distributed by Word UK. The album was recorded and mixed by Joe Bellamy at Peace in the Valley Recording in Arleta, California; with Al Perkins producing. All tracks written by Don Francisco.
Featuring Don Francisco on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, backed by a session band consisting of Richard Souther on keyboards, Joe Bellamy on bass, and Cactus Moser on drums. Harmony vocals provided by Laura Boone Browning (tracks: A5, B1) and Robin Spurs (tracks: A2, A3, B2, B4).
From a ‘Brother of the Son‘ to an advocate of ‘Holiness‘, Don Francisco has been a consummate storyteller obsessed by biblical stories and concepts. On his new record, Francisco has turned his attention and scngwriting talents to one of the most basic of biblical concepts, God’s power.
Francisco has always related to Christian music more as a man with a ministry than as an “artist,” and this album offers much in the way of spiritual content. Interestingly, the context of this content is his most musically pleasing album to date. The melodies and production are present as they never have been before. In fact, vocally, Francisco is more pleasing and accessible than ever before. At moments, he is even reminiscent of the late, great storyteller Harry Chapin. Francisco has total control over his subject matter and a passion for its message.
«Let the Waters Roll», «I’m Gonna Walk», and «One Thing I Ask» are fairly representative of the album; they deal with living in the power of God. The premise of the album, looked at from a number of perspectives, is that God’s power is available and that it is a joy to walk in that power.
Some albums have that indescribable something about them that makes them irresistible. ‘Power’ is one of those records. Pleasant yet challenging. Simultaneously convicting and encouraging. Having never been a big Don Francisco fan, I have found ‘Power’ a challenging and enjoyable record. It is one that I might have overlooked. I hope you won’t. [Devlin Donaldson, CCM, July 1987]
