Pullin’ No Punches

Description

Pullin’ No Punches is the sophomore album by the American hip-hop group D.O.C. (a.k.a. Disciples of Christ), released on StarSong Records in 1993. The album was produced, arranged, and recorded by Rodney “Drac” Gibson and Tedd “Tedd T” Tjornhom. Mixed by Chuck Zwicky, Drac, and Tedd T. D.O.C. is Alton Hood (Ben Reges), Michael Brown (Prophet), and Kelvin Harvey (Absalom).

As the announcer states right before the opening grooves kick in, “This needs to be played at a very high volume, preferably in a neighborhood.” He’s right. This record is one that shouldn’t be kept within the privacy of one’s home or headphones, but shared with everybody. With that in mind, give the old boom-box a spring cleaning; make sure that your four wheeler’s woofers and sub-woofers are in good working order because they’re going to sho’nuff, down in the ‘hood work out from the hot grooves and rhymes jumping off from this disc.

These masters of rhyme also combine hot, Boyz II Men style vocal harmonies (check out «Innocent Love» to see what I’m talking about), with a touch of (ready for this) hard, heavy metal-styled rock.

Let’s deal with the latter. On the proclaimed, «Hip Hop Body Slam Hard Rock Holy Spirit Jam [bet you can’t say that backwards], God Gave Rock and Roll to You», the crew joins forces with hard rock labelmates, Bride, pulling off a coup de gras. D.O.C. and Bride have taken a page from music history, looking back at the success story of one other rap/rock union, (remember the Run DMC/Aerosmith jam of a few years back, «Walk This Way»?), demonstrating that the same fomula can work in Christian music. And boy does it work!

For those locked into the house music craze, make sure not to pass by the pulsating rhymes if «Keeping on Lookin’ Up». D.O.C. is making strides to move onward and upward. This album will give them an enormous boost on their quest. [Tim A. Smith, CCM, May 1993]
