Mission of Mercy is the sixth studio album by the American rock combo DeGarmo & Key Band, released on Power Discs in August 1983, distributed by The Benson Company. Also distributed by Capitol Records. The album was recorded by John Hampton at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; with Ed DeGarmo and Dana Key producing for Mint Productions (except vocals produced by Ron Griffin). Strings recorded by Brent King at Sound Stage Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. All songs written by Ed DeGarmo & Dana Key except
Featuring a cover of the Billy Preston classic “That’s The Way God Planned It”.
Featuring Dana Key on guitar and lead vocals, Ed DeGarmo on keyboards and vocals, Tony Pilcher guitar and vocals, Tommy Cathey on bass and vocals, and Greg Morrow on drums. As well featuring Chad Cromwell on percussion. Strings performed by the Nashville String Machine arranged and conducted by Carl Marsh.
Mission of Mercy was included among the Best Albums of 1983 by CCM Magazine, voted number ten (tied with Bruce Cockburn’s The Trouble with Normal) on a list featuring eleven albums released from the last quarter of 1982 through the last quarter of 1983. – In October, Devlin Donaldson said of D&K’s new sound: ” ‘Mission of Mercy’ makes a public testament certifying that DeGarmo & Key have found a new vision and are beginning to explore it. They no longer rely on guitar heroics or a Hammond organ screaming through a Leslie to blast their fans into submission. Neither are they putting faith into calculated pop songs to carry them into a broader market. Instead, they are writing songs with substance that just happen to be commercial and arranging them with the synthesizers defining the focus.”
