The Night We Called it a Day is the full-length debut album by the American hip-hop collective Deepspace5, released on BEC Recordings’ hip-hop imprint Uprok Records in November 2001, a division of Tooth & Nail Records.

On March 11th, 2001, the members of Deepspace5 assembled together to record this album. Spending 12-14 hours a day over a weeklong span in Playdough’s two-bedroom apartment, the process took place. Ideas were held high or shot down, personalities fused and clashed and family was brought closer together as beautiful music was made. [Excerpt from the CD liner notes]

I have to admit that the first time I listened to Deepspace 5 I dismissed them as just another depressing Christian rap group, however, ‘The Night We Called it a Day’ definately proved me wrong. This combination of well established hip hop artists refreshes our ears with a blend of intellectual rhymes with a hint of humour and although some tracks have to be heard a few times to be understood, the overall vibe is very chilled.
