Reflections: A Retrospective of the past ten years

Description

Reflections, sub-titled A Retrospective of the past ten years, is a compilation album by the American singer Debby Boone, released on Lamb & Lion Records in ‎1988. It is a retrospective that collects songs from the four gospel albums Debby Boone recorded in the 1980s. The various tracks on the album were produced by Brown Bannister, Michael Omartian, and Dan Posthuma.

Simple, uncluttered, tastefully elegant – the cover art on Debby Boone’s latest release gives a telling glimpse into the contents of this 10 year retrospective. More than anything else ‘Reflections’ seems to be a personal expression of faith.

Musically, it doesn’t move out into any new territory for her. It is a classy and unpretentious collection of many of Debby’s most inspirational songs. Most of the songs are delivered using the upper register of her voice, leaving her gutsier, pop/rock style to past projects. In songs like «Morningstar», where she she sings “Laying my own dreams in the dust/ Choosing a servants’ heart, I must” we view a Debby Boone who isn’t singing about causes or spouting pretty love songs, but rather a singer who is letting us into her prayer closet.

Athough she does include «Can You Reach Me My Friend?» and «Heart of the Matter», two moving ballads that issue a call to lost loved ones, the album’s focus is on praise to the Father, and living a surrendered life. [Stephanie Bennett, CCM, February 1989]
