Choose Life

Description

Choose Life is an album by the American singer Debby Boone, released on Lamb & Lion Records in ‎1985. The album was engineered by John Guess with Michael Omartian producing. It reflects the danceable pop and high production values common to Omartian, who also wrote 8 out of 10 tracks, with lyrics by Stormie Omartian.

Debby Boone has covered a lot of ground since garnering the Best New Artist Grammy in 1977. She’s been a part-time actress and singer and full-time wife and mom. Realizing the futility of dedicating a career to trying to top one of the longest running #1 singles of all time («You Light Up My Life»), Boone has chosen to release less product less often. That makes it all the more exciting when a disc such as ‘Choose Life’ comes along.

‘Choose Life’ is Boone’s bid to appeal to an audience younger than those who had been purchasing her earlier, praise-oriented material. Eight of the ten songs were written by producer Michael Omartian and wife, Stormie. It should come as no surprise that they’re chock-full of Omartian’s keyboard hooks. No indication is given as to whether the session was analog or digital, but congrats go to engineer John Guess for the virtually imperceptible noise level.

Debby’s vocals throughout are brimming with presence and warmth. Whether belting out a dance-rocker in sassy style («Choose Life») or displaying her rich interpretive powers («The Lord Is So Good»), Boone is a welcome guest in any medium, especially compact disc. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, May 1986]
