Once in a Lifetime

Description

Once in a Lifetime is the tenth studio album by the American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist David Meece, released on StarSong Records in 1993. The album was produced and recorded by Brian Tankersley at Skylab Recording Studio in Nashville and Shakin Studio and Allies Recording Studio in Franklin, Tennessee; with David Meece co-producing. Mixed by Tankersley at Alpha Studios in Burbank, California.

David Meece has always presented the truth in a positive pop style that touched thousands of lives. As he primarily wrote in a third person fashion, we were often left wondering how what he sang and wrote about affected Meece as an individual. His last album, ‘Learning to Trust‘, released almost four years ago, gave us a glimpse of Meece’s heart and his personal struggles. Where have the last four years taken David Meece? Down the road to recovery and reconciliation with his childhood and an alcoholic father.

‘Once in a Lifetime’ seems to serve as an audio diary of David’s struggle for wholeness. The first song «Inside Out» is the first indication that this project takes a very different approach to the truth, upclose and personal: “Gotta open that door/ Take a look inside/ Change what’s in there/ From the inside out.” After acknowledging internal struggles, «Over You» and «Brokenness» lays the problems of the past at the feet of the Lordship of Jesus and asks for the Holy Spirit’s help.

The most poignant and insightful glimpse at Meece’s past and present is «My Father’s Chair». It is a touching journey through the despair of a young boy’s discovery that his father’s chair is empty, the prayer of a father that his children can always find him, to the throne where the Heavenly Father’s chair is always occupied.

The title track, «Once in a Lifetime», could very well be the theme song for the recovery movement. Encouraged to take one day at a time and seize the day and make it count. ‘Once in a Lifetime’ takes you through the cycle of recovery: acknowledging a problem, seeking God’s wisdom for direction, confronting the past with God’s help, gaining victory by taking it step by step, then reaching out to others with the hope you’ve found.

David Meece has never sounded better vocally or written better material. He must be applauded, not just for recording the best album of his career, but for making the journey to wholeness and being brave enough to share it with all of us. [Jena White, CCM, July 1993]
