Song of Songs

Description

Song of Songs is the gospel debut album by the American pop/rock band David & the Giants independently released on the band’s own label Song of Songs Records in 1977. The album was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Sheffield and the Sound of Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama; as well as at N.A.R.C. Records and Huff Recording Studio in Laurel, Mississippi. All songs written by the Huff brothers; David, Rayborn and Clayborn. The last track on the album, “Save Me”, features the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section as well as the Jackson Strings.

David & the Giants was actually a band that pre-dated the Jesus Music era. They were a popular mainstream act in the late 60s/early 70s, sharing stage with the likes of the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart. That changed when they met the Lord. After a number of successful albums on major labels such as Priority Records (a gospel subsidiary of CBS/Columbia) and Myrrh Records, they broke out of the mold, built their own studio, founded their own label, releasing albums independently. The result was 18 albums over 40 years, and tons of radio airplay. The group officially disbanded at the end of 1997. (Trivia: The band’s second drummer, Keith Thibodeaux, was a successful child star – he was “Little Ricky” on I Love Lucy and one of Opie’s friends on The Andy Griffith Show.)

Prior to hooking up with Christian labels such as Priority and Myrrh in the ’80s, David & The Giants released several custom recordings in an easygoing pop/soft-rock style. The group at this point in time consisted of brothers Rayborn Huff (piano, Arp string ensemble, moog), Clayborn Huff (bass) and David Huff (guitars, piano), together with Owen Hale (drums) and Gerald Hagan (piano, moog, Fender Rhodes). Song Of Songs is their first album – a welcome collection of mellow songs that rises above standard ccm through their catchy melodies and smart arrangements. Keyboards obviously play an integral role in their sound, but you’ll notice they work in some electric guitar too. «Roll On», «Rough And Rocky», «Turn, Turn», «Glory Hallelujah», «Jesus Saves» and «The Lord Is My Lover» are some of the titles. Good production for a custom LP, more or less embodying the sound of late-’70s light rock radio. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
