Description

Praise Jams, Vol. 1 is the debut album by the American contemporary P&W dance/pop project Club J, released on Integrity Music in 2004. The album was produced and mixed by Kurt Goebel at The Groove Portal in Nashville, Tennessee (except tracks 2 and 10 mixed by Jeff Pitzer at The Flood Zone). Vocals arranged and produced by Kurt Goebel and Ellen Tift. “Tune into a totally new frequency with off-the-hook versions of your favorite worship hits by Club J.”

Featuring vocals by various lead singers with programming and keyboards (as well as guitar) provided by producer Kurt Goebel, and as well featuring Greg Hagen, Jim Colella, and Michael Ripoll on guitars; Matt Pierson on bass; and Jonathan Smith on drums.

The cynic within me shudders at the use of ‘groove’ anywhere in modern music terminology, so it was with some anxiety that I approached this production by Kurt Goebel for ‘Worldwide Groove Corporation’. Many excellent worship songs are present, albeit in remixed form, and this is indeed to greater or worse effect. Some receive a basic, house beat treatment, whil others have more subtlety to the production, with nice acoustic samples and touches mixed in with the clumsier addition of beats. I can’t help but feel a little let down by the quality of the production, as songs that could quite easily have lent themselves to funkier or more ‘uplifting’ club versions have been clumsily or even cheesily remixed.
