A word from Arthur Blessitt, “Minister of Sunset Strip”

From the midst of flashing lights and Rock music of the “Strip” in Hollywood have come many influential movements and musical styles. But the most important is the impact of “Jesus’ Music” today! Andrae Crouch, Jimmy Owens, and Charles McPeeters were the pioneers of the music as they sang and I preached in clubs along the Sunset Strip in the mid-sixties. Charles McPeeters is a dear brother and friend of mine. His music with the “Disciples Three” and “The New Creatures” was one of the very first to communicate the message of the Lord Jesus Christ with a contemporary sound to the youth of our world.

Charles received Christ as his Saviour in 1965 when he was entertaining in Hollywood and living in Beverly Hills. He is still a “fun-tastic” entertainer, but the message this time is for Jesus!

This album is dedicated to the memory of Charles’ brother, Fred James “Jim” McPeeters, who ministered with me for many years on the Sunset Strip mission field. He also walked with me as I carried the Cross through America and the British Isles. Jim was my dearest brother, companion and co-worker until his “promotion” to Heaven on Easter Sunday, 1977.

I am excited that this unique album, “FACES”, will serve as a continual memorial to Jim and all the other young people who gave all they had in loving service to Jesus Christ, The King of Kings!

[A note on the back of the LP sleeve]

Here’s some more “gospel kitsch” to file next to your Jim Gill albums. This is the second custom LP by a man known less for his music than for founding the Holy Ghost Repair Service street ministry in Hollywood where he bumped heads with hippie preacher Arthur Blessit. Sadly he passed on in the early ‘80s but not before blessing us with this amalgam of doo-wop, rock ‘n roll, cocktail jazz, mariachi, Perry Como and whatnot, garnished with lovely nasal, falsetto, jive, and Elvis-impersonated vocals. Dig titles like «Greasy Truth» and the hilarious «First Church Of The Frigid-Air». The lounge numbers are my favorites. This guy was definitely gooney but behind the big nose, glasses, and cigar lies a man who clearly loved the Lord. Band help by Mike Johnson, Randy Matthews and Danny Taylor.
