Description
The Secret of Flight is the third album by the British singer and songwriter Caroline Bonnett, released on What? Records in 1994. The album was produced by Jon Sweet and Brad Davis.
Caroline is in my book one of the finest singers in Christendom and having heard reports months back from a record exec (not one from her current record company incidentally) that this is a “brilliant” album, I approached it with the kind of awe a small boy approaches a toy shop. I was not disappointed. This IS a brilliant set, full of deep, rich delights. Take the utterly beautiful title track with one of the most memorable choruses I’ve heard for years. “The secret of flight/ You took me from the river bed/ To the mountain top/ Faster than the speed of light/ The secret of flight.” Or what about «You Bring Me Joy» with a delicious ricocheting drums and bass groove and a delightful worship lyric purred in breathy sweetness to produce a little masterpiece that could fit into any sanctified dance deejay’s box. Another beauty is the poignant «Scars» with an accompaniment largely consisting of a sampled harp! Throughout producer and programmer John Sweet has brought out the best of an exquisite set of songs, never cluttering, allowing the focus to remain constantly on that husky, haunting, sweet yet strong voice. A magnificent album. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, December 1994]
