It’s a Ska, Ska, Ska, Ska World

Description

It’s a Ska, Ska, Ska, Ska World is a full-length album by the American ska/alternative rock band Bunch of Believers (a.k.a. B.o.B.), released on Li’l Buddy Records in 1999, a division of KMG Records, manufactured and distributed by KMG Records. The album was recorded by Shishka at The Soup Kitchen in Franklin, Tennessee; with Bob B. Pinn producing. Additional vocals recorded by Bob Belew at Papa Goose Studios and Bob Parr at Onpar Studios. Mixed by J.R. McNeely at The Sound Kitchen in Franklin. All songs written by Bob Sled except “Not Ashamed, a song written by Peter Furler and Steve Taylor and originally recorded by Newsboys on their 1992-album by the same title.

The band features Billybob “Wuz up” Brown on lead vocals, Bobby “Riff” Bogart on guitar, Robbie “Da Bottom” Williams on bass, and Bob “Scooter” Bash on drums, as well as Roberto “Tweetie” Mondavi on saxophone, Rob “The Blast” Cooper on trumpet, Robert “J-Smoove” Slide on trombone, and Roberta “Supa Diva” Wyte on keyboards and lead vocals.

Like reggae, there isn’t a tremendous amount of musical diversity among the ranks of ska bands. If you’ve heard one band that has the sound – a blend of pop, jazz and punk with high-speed power chords and tight, blaring horn arrangements – you’ve pretty much heard them all. So the distinctions come in the way of band personalities, which is evidenced in the lyrical tone of each band’s songs. Ska bands encompass personalities ranging from sexy (No Doubt) to serious (The Supertones) to the extremely witty (Save Ferris). Bunch of Believers falls solidly into the last category.

Known as B.O.B., this octet is living proof of the idea that the closer the music is to the fringe, the bolder the message – and in this band’s case, the more cleverly – delivered as well. B.O.B. (whose members “names” are all derivatives of Robert) offers thoughts on topics both sublime (abstinence, supernatural healing) and ridiculous (bargain hunting, dancing pastors) as well as plenty in between (missions, home schooling). The strength of B.O.B. is in its wordplay, as on «Mission Trip to Mexico»: “You see Jesus came to save the world from sin/ And if I may say so, this Salvation is totally free/ It won’t even cost you a peso.”

Other highlights include «That’s What I Believe» (the Apostles’ Creed, B.O.B.-style) and a rousing cover of Newsboys’ «Not Ashamed». [Derek Wesley Selby, CCM, May 1999]
