Red Bird – Blue Sky

Description

Red Bird – Blue Sky is the fifth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Billy Crockett, independently released on his own label Walking Angel Records in 1995.

Some things in life just don’t make sense. And until God pulls out the Master Plan, some never will.

Billy Crockett’s 10-year long and winding road into contemporary Christian music is one of those things. He has a lyrical intelligence that rivals Sting, the depth of Michael Card, the vocal butter of James Taylor, and an acoustical prowess that would garner A’s at Keaggy Academy. You’d think the big boys would be all over themselves trying to sign or keep this guy. But no.

It’s a good thing Crockett is set on making his own lemonade. It’s good stuff.

‘Red Bird Blue Sky’ is Crockett’s first release since ‘Any Starlight Night‘ in 1991, and it is the first on Walking Angel Records, his own label. Whether you’re a Billy aficionado or thought Crockett was king of the wild frontier, ‘Red Bird Blue Sky’ is well worth your ear. It is his best effort to date.

The lead-off track, «Song and Dance» is the joyful invitation to the whole collection, which includes «The Wake Up Song» (a saucy little island groove with some really hip background commentary), and «Friends at Last», one of the three songs that hold a mirror up to the truth of friendship.

Stand-outs include: «This Kind», a hip little, bass laden number about God’s love guaranteed to make you wanna move and «Inside Out», that, according to Crockett, is a “bouncing tribute to the upside-down heart logic of Christ.” But a special nod goes to «Thankful Boys and Girls», which sings with simplicity and richness the landscape of life through the telescope of gratitude.

Jim Rommel’s accordion and Crockett’s discovery of the mandolin add a charming new dimension to an already ripe project. Lisa Glasgow and Chris Rodriguez provide a solid backup, and as expected, Crockett never disappoints on guitar.

In his own words, ‘Red Bird Blue Sky’ came into being “because sometimes your heart soars. Imagination takes off. Life feels bright and love is solid. Not that we are free of trouble. But trouble is over-rated. Hope deserves a hearing.” [Melissa Riddle, CCM, May 1995]
