Description
The self-titled debut album by the American pop-rock band Big Tent Revival was released on ForeFront Records in 1995. Also marketed and distributed in the UK and Europe by Alliance Music. The album was recorded by Paul Ebersold and Skidd Mills, assisted by Erik Flettrich, at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; with Dana Key of DeGarmo & Key Band fame and Ebersold producing. Mixed by John Hampton and Ebersold at Ardent Studios.
A vehicle for the singing and song writing talents of Steve Wiggins whose previous solo debut was a turkey saved from the Thanksgiving table by the classic song «Eighteen Inch Journey». Enough history, Wiggins and Co go for it with a vengeance mixing rock with touches of Memphis soul. «Something About Jesus» is a wonderful rocker that speeds along; «Way It Ought To Be» grooves with a dance beat and throughout the proceedings Wiggins’ vocals soar and growl with passion. The whole album has a loose soulful feel with plenty of room to breathe. Gospel choirs pop in and out, there’s some great organ and punchy horns add to the soul feel. The album’s closer «The Ballad Of Arlis Richards» is a story song containing the most inspiring and uplifting chorus I’ve heard in ages! I really like this album and it’s enjoyed almost constant companionship with my CD player recently. However, it isn’t a turkey free environment! The dreadful twee «Two Sets Of Jones» may go down well in middle America but left me reaching for the puke bucket. But don’t let one danker put you off, elsewhere this album verges on the magnificent. And isn’t Big Tent Revival a brilliant name for a band? [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, August 1995]
