Words for Loss for Words is the sophomore full-length album by the American singer and songwriter Beki Hemingway formerly of This Train, independently released on Salt Lady Records in 2002. The album was produced and engineered by Bryan Mitchell and John Mark Painter, the latter of Fleming & John fame. “Good Again” and “Only Thing Worse” feature Jonathan Rundman on keyboards and backing vocals (the founder of Salt Lady Records).

This gem from 2002 has taken a goodly while to make it to the Cross Rhythms spotlight but it’s well worth the journey. American singer/songwriter Beki has one of those voices with the rare ability to live the lines she sings, so one moment she sounds battered and bruised, the next suffused with a transcendent hope. Lyrics explore such topics as the enigma of the Christian life («Good Again» – “It will all work out somehow/ All the pieces they do fit/ Even if we don’t see how”), allowing God to go deeper («To Spare You») and enigmatic images of a hope of Saturday night escape («Saturday»). Throughout production, be it the grunge-tinged rock of «Hope Is All I Have» or the haunting ambient-come-country sound of the closer «Floating Away» (which ends with a fragment of Horatio Spafford’s timeless «Peace Like A River») is superb.
