Description
What Mountain? is the debut album by the American techno group Antidote (husband-and-wife duo Jorge & Leigh Goyco), released on N*Soul Music in 1998. All tracks written and produced by Antidote.
This is an interesting CD. Production quality needs smoothing out a little, which may be why this CD isn’t on general release. All the same, it contains some nice musical soundscapes, grooves and vibes. A comparison to Portished and Goldie in mellower moods should give you a general idea of how this project sounds. There are retro synth sounds, squelchy bass noises and hypnotic trippy rhythms, accompanying vulnerable, trancey female vocals which deliver short, repetitive phrases of sometimes vague, sometimes spiritual lyrics. But is it good? Well, it has its moments, like the song «Everywhere I Go» or one of the more lively tunes (though not necessarily overflowing with energy), «Love» which simply repeats the phrase “God is love” over and over again! Even so, many of the nine tunes on offer just go on too long (only one is shorter than six minutes). The interesting slowly turns into the irritating, the laid back into the sleepy, the repetitive into the rambling. But never mind, as this is still a significant CD, showing a lot of potential for Christians into trip-hop and other experimental forms of dance music. [Andy Cooper, Cross Rhythms, December 1998]
