Description
Flying Lessons is a solo album by the American singer and songwriter Annie Herring of 2nd Chapter of Acts fame, released on Live Oak Records in 1989, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was recorded by Buck Herring, Dan Willard, and Greg Hunt at Easter Song Studios in Garden Valley, and at Rosewood Studio in Tyler, Texas; with Herring producing. Mixed by Herring, Willard, and Hunt at Easter Song Studios. Arranged by John Andrew Schreiner and Jim Tenneboe.
Best known as writer of the «Easter Song» and, for 17 years, as one third of 2nd Chapter of Acts, Annie Herring steps out on her own with her third solo release on 13 years. The album is a nice blend of ballads and up-tempo pop tunes (all but one written or co-written by Herring). Lyrically, most songs are reflective in nature – the notable exception being the Matthew Ward/Jim Tenneboe jammer, «Everyday Street».
While the overall sound of ‘Flying Lessons’ is similar to 2nd Chapter’s ‘Far Away Places‘, Herring seems to cut loose, vocally and in her writing, a bit more here. Best of all, along with the solid lyrical content, one gets the definite impression that Herring had a great time making this record. That alone makes it worth listening to.
