Description
Peace in the Puzzle, sub-titled Solo Harp Compositions, is an instrumental album by the American harpist Amy Shreve, released on Meadowlark Records in 1986, manufactured, marketed and distributed by Sparrow Records. The album was engineered by Norbert Putnam and J.T. Cantwell at The Bennett House in Franklin, Tennessee; with Peter York producing. Recorded August 6-9, 1986 direct to half inch 2 track tape at 30 inches per second with no noise reduction employed. All songs written and arranged by Amy Shreve except “Jester’s Lament and “Hymn VII” written by Tommy Greer. The album was part of the Meadowlark Series, a series of contemplative instrumental albums launched by Sparrow Records in late 1985, sub-titled “Music without words for thoughts without limits” and later ammended to “Music for your personal retreat“.
There are diverse shades and subtleties to this age-old instrument, and Amy Shreve’s performance explores several paths. Alternately, her instrument takes on the characteristics of a strummed guitar or an acoustic piano. Without additional accompaniment, Shreve varies textures and tempos, all the time mindful that many listeners consider the harp “esoteric.” Shreve joins the company of artists such as Vollenweider in dispelling the notion that harp music is not for the masses. An altogether compelling debut. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, February 1987]
