I’m Still Here is an album by the American gospel singer Albertina Walker, released on Verity Records in 1997, a division of Word.
After making 60 albums, spending 40 years in music and earning countless Grammy, Stellar and GMWA awards, Albertina Walker ought to be titling new works something like I’m Really Tired or Haven’t You Folks Had Enough Already?
But the truth is we haven’t had enough of this woman’s inspiring, emotion-filled music just yet, and (thankfully) she’s not too tired either.
It’s fitting her latest album is called ‘I’m Still Here’ Still Here. Boasting 11 classic songs, this CD is everything that’s good about gospel music.
The title song sets the tone, belting out a testimony to God’s faithfulness while offering generous organ riffs, stunning choir work and ample opportunity to feel the power of Walker’s smoky, passionate voice. The toe-tappin’ «Lord I Thank You» quickly follows suit, mixing a bluesy tone with bright horns to create a high-spirited, old-style gospel praise session. Walker shines again in «I’ve Got Jesus» – a simmering, hand-waving testimonial that’s unashamed to brag on God – and in the rollicking, organ-driven, «You Can’t Tell It».
The only miscue on ‘I’m Still Here’ is a swinging remake of the Broadway hit from yesteryear, «The Impossible Dream». The musical style seems wrong for the song, and its message seems out of place. Still, it’d be worth listening to that a dozen times for one chance to hear Walker pouring our her soul in the album’s closing prayer – a skin-tingling rendition of «Close to Thee». That song alone is reason enough to be glad Albertina Walker is still here. [Mike Nappa, CCM, October 1997]
