Description
Moontraveler is the solo debut album by the American singer, songwriter, and producer Aaron Sprinkle of Poor Old Lu fame, released on Organic Records in July 1999, a Pamplin Music label, manufactured and distributed by Pamplin Distribution. The album was produced and recorded by Aaron Sprinkle at Jer’s house, Aaron’s house, and at The Sound Kitchen in Franklin, Tennessee. (Additional production by Karina Sprinkle on tracks 1, 5, and 9.) Mixed by J.R. McNeely assisted by Melissa Cabezas-Mattey at The Sound Kitchen (except track 4 produced, recorded, and mixed by Blake Wescott at Casa Recording Co. in Seattle, Washington. Vocals, instruments, and programming by Aaron Sprinkle. All songs by Aaron Sprinkle except track 5 co-written with Karina Sprinkle.
It should be no surprise that Aaron Sprinkle was itching to stretch his creative muscles. Sprinkle was not the lyricist for the much-loved Poor Old Lu and was only one quarter of the music writing team, although his brash, innovative guitar riffs formed much of Lu’s personality.
Sprinkle first began stretching his songwriting muscles in the short-lived Rose Blossom Punch, but Moontraveler marks the true emergence of Sprinkle’s musical gifts, since the artist produced the album and plays nearly every note himself. (That could be construed as artistic vanity or simply prudent use of the recording budget.) But Sprinkle’s musical approach certainly suits the theme of Moontraveler, which is, in summary, owning up to one’s sin and acknowledging Christ’s atonement.
Recognizing the therapeutic value of confronting one’s fears, shortcomings and insecurities, Sprinkle peppers the album with phrases like, “And I think I’m borderline losing my mind” («Not All Bad») and “Remembering what I’ve seen takes a lot out of me” («What Sorry Could Be»). Yet God’s redemption is evident in tracks such as «Solace» and «Motor Cars». [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, October 1999]
