The Roar of Love

Description

The Roar of Love is the fourth studio album by the American vocal trio 2nd Chapter of Acts, released on Sparrow Records in 1980 (though actually recorded in 1978). The album jacket says: The 2nd Chapter of Acts presents: The Roar of Love – A Musical Journey Into the Wonder of C.S. Lewis’ Narnia. It is a concept album that tells the story of the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis (“most of the songs in this album were inspired by reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe…”).

The album was produced and engineered by Buck Herring at United Western Recorders and Sunwest Studios in Hollywood, and as well at Frogshoes in Burbank, California. (All the vocals were cut in a bedroom of the house the trio lived in at the time in Burbank. They converted the garage into a mixing room, knocked a hole in the bedroom wall and ran a microphone cord into it… “If you crank up the volume, you will hear a coo coo clock go off at the very end of the record. The clock was hanging on a wall outside the bedroom.”)

Featuring a session band consisting of Michael Omartian (who also arranged the album) on keyboards and synthesizers, Phil Keaggy and Jay Graydon on guitars, as well as a rhythm section consisting of Leland Sklar and David Kemper on bass and drums, respectively.

THE ROAR OF LOVE – 2ND CHAPTER OF ACTS – Sparrow SPR 1033

This LP is based on C. S. Lewis’ “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” from “The Chronicles of Narnia.” The group’s vocal interplay and progressive music treatment make an excellent concept package. [Record World (Gospel Album Picks), March 29, 1980]

It’s on The 2nd Chapter Of Acts’ fourth studio LP The Roar Of Love where the group experiences their creative peak. Inspired by C. S. Lewis’ book ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ (from ‘The Chronicles Of Nania’ series), this album shows 2nd Chapter at their most artistic, their most “progressive”. The MOR edges that often characterized Mansion Builder are completely gone, Annie’s song-writing has never been better, Michael Omartian’s varied synthesizer sounds are magical and Phil Keaggy’s lead guitar is first rate. Perhaps it was the idea of doing a conceptual work that allowed more room for varied expression, as titles like «Are You Going To Nania», «Lucy’s Long Gone», «Turkish Delight», «Aslan Is Killed», «Witch’s Demise/Get It Into Your Head» and «White Stag» attest. At any rate The Roar Of Love is probably the closest CCM has ever come to perfection. Attractive fold-out cover with colorful painting of Aslan the lion. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition].
