The Story

Description

The Story is the fourteenth and final studio album by Scottish Celtic rock band Runrig, independently released on the band’s own label Ridge Records in January 2016. Also released by Sony Music. The album was produced by band member Brian Hurren. All songs were written by Runrig’s Macdonald brothers except track 4 written by Malcolm Jones and Brian Hurren.

On 26 September 2017 Runrig announced that after 45 years they would be “pulling the curtain down” on their music careers. The band announced one final tour named The Final Mile, taking part in Germany, Denmark and UK, ending with one final show in Stirling’s City Park called The Last Dance. Tickets for The Last Dance sold out in minutes and, after a few days of behind the scenes planning, Runrig announced another concert in the same location the night before. Tickets for this night sold out in less than six hours.

This version is a re-recording with Bruce Guthro on vocals, duetting with Gaelic singer, Julie Fowlis. It was used as the promo single to accompany The Final Mile and Last Dance series of Farewell Concerts, June – August 2018. Whereas the original version from The Story had an atmospheric production that alluded to the ill-fated Columbia Space Mission of 2003 and the death of astronaut Laurel Clark, (Laurel had used the Runrig song “Running To The Light” as her daily wake-up call from Mission Control in Houston and her Runrig CD was subsequently found virtually intact amongst the wreckage in a field in Texas) this version is closer to the way the song was originally conceived: as a song of love eternal. The Story album reached No. 26 in the UK charts, No. 6 in Germany and No. 2 in Denmark. The song first appeared on Runrig’s new compilation album, The Ones That Got Away released in June 2018.
