Description
The Rick Powell Choir Book is an album by the American songwriter, multi-musician, arranger, and producer Rick Powell (Richard Dean Powell: February 21, 1935 – June 21, 2006), released on Word Records in 1974. The album was recorded by Rex Collier at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee; with Charles F. Brown and Rick Powell producing. Mixed by Jon Yeaworth at My Place in Nashville. Arranged by Rick Powell.
Featuring mostly covers including the classics “Fool’s Wisdom” (a song written by the duo Malcolm Wild and Alwyn Wall and original recorded on their 1973-album by the same title) and “Didn’t He?” (a song written by Randy Matthews and original recorded on his 1973-album, Son of Dust).
Trivia: Rick Powell produced and arranged more than 200 albums (mainly Christian music) for such acts as the The Bill Gaither Trio, The Imperials, The Oak Ridge Boys, Kenneth Copland, The Speer Family and Pat Boone. He had 35 choir books published, including 16 children’s albums. With wife Sylvia (Salemi) Powell, he collaborated on numerous music programs, among them Treehouse Club for the Childrens Television Series, Helen O’Connell’s Christmas Album, Sunshine Factory (Childrens Television Series), and the Pat Boone Family Christmas Special.
Praise the Lord with timbrel and dance, psaltery and harp, trumpet and cornet, and loud, clanging cymbals! Let the sea roar … let the floods clap their hands … let the hills be joyful together.
That all seems reasonable enough, at least for the Old Testament Jews. Today I guess it means for me to read psalms and sing hymns. Is that really enough, though? Is singing and reading the only way I can praise God? I think not.
I don’t know that God intends for me to start taking timbrel lessons, but I do know I am to praise Him: from the rising of the sun … with my whole heart … with every breath I take.
The only way I can express praise – or anything – in terms of my culture: language, dress, hair style, car style or even house style.
Rapidly advancing technology is also part of our culture. The electronic music synthesizer, with is ability to create almost any sound imaginable, along with the related electronic equipment, provides a unique opportunity to “make a joyful noise and sing unto the Lord a new song.”
