Pete Carlson – You Were There

Description

You Were There is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Pete Carlson, released on Tempo Records in 1976. Also released in the UK by Grapevine the following year. The album was recorded and mixed by Christopher Banninger at Pinebrook Recording Studio in Alexandria, Indiana; with John Darnall producing and arranging. (“Produced by arrangement with Tempo Records.”) All songs written by Pete Carlson except tracks A3 and B4 written by Chuck Girard, track A5 written by Thomas, track B2 written by Thompson, and track B5 written by Annie Herring of 2nd Chapter of Acts.

“Warmth” is a good word to use when describing Pete Carlson’s ‘You Were There’. Like a roaring fire on a cold winter evening, this album invites you to snuggle up close to your speakers. The warmth undoubtedly results from Pete’s relationship with the Creator of the universe, who is described in the Bible as a “consuming fire.”

The kindling that starts this blaze is «In This Quiet Hour». «His Promise» keeps the spark alive. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire; in this case, Chuck Girard’s «Evermore». The Latin-flavored title cut adds fuel, and Anne Herring’s «I Don’t Want to Go Home» is another toasty log. Five more like them create a cheery coziness.

Carlson’s velvety vocals make this possible. No crackling branches or popping wood chips, the album is considerably less than noisy. About two dozen of Pete’s friends, including a very talented string section, earn their campfire merit badges. They assure the warmth coming through every time the needle hits the disc.

‘You Were There’ will warm the heart without scorching the purchaser. [Russ Proctor, Harmony Magazine, No. 11]
