Description
True Stories is the sophomore album by the British singer and songwriter Kevin Gould, released in both the UK and the US on Myrrh Records in 1976, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Lindsay Kidd at Morgan Studios in London, England; with Gordon Miller producing. All songs written by Kevin Gould.
Featuring a session band with Cliff Hall on piano, Barry Bynum of Liberation Suite fame on guitar, and a rhythm section consisting of Dave Markee on bass and Tony Carr on drums. Backing vocals by Kevin Gould, Mandy Moore, as well as Maureen McCafferty (a.k.a. Mo Turner) and Mo Brown of Brightwinter fame.
True Stories has more of a CCM feel than Let’s Join Together, especially since the added string orchestration softens up a lot of Kevin’s songs. If you want boogie rock-and-roll, there are two numbers here that qualify: «The Story Of Nicky Cruz (Run Baby Run)» and «My Feet Are On The Rock And My Name Is On The Roll» (that’s guitarist Barry Bynum of Liberation Suite dishing out the licks). «Space! Or Ditty» asks why the Soviets and Americans shook hands in space “when you won’t shake hands on earth”. Other topics include «Mister Universe», «Concrete Jungle» and «Everyone’s Looking For A Star». This album was also released in the US (Myrrh MSA-6573). [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
Kevin Gould’s second album ‘True Stories’ was recorded for Word UK in 1976. Kevin had mixed feelings about the album. Said Kevin, “I think at the time I did that album there was a trend toward trying to make Christian songs a little bit more thoughtful with the lyrics, and that’s what I tried to do. Looking back on it, I think some of the songs were quite good. Unfortunately, I listen to it and I think, ‘Oh, man, I just wish the production was better.’ It was a bit of a rushed album, really. Norman Miller, who was then at Word Records, was the executive producer. He had a budget and he didn’t want to go over it, so that album was a bit rushed. I look back at it and think, ‘I wish we’d had more time, I wish that the production was better.’ We had very good musicians on it, actually. We had Dave Markee who is now a Christian – he wasn’t then – at the time he was the bass player for Eric Clapton. We had Cliff Hall, who was Cliff Richard‘s piano player. Barry Bynum (the American guitarist from Liberation Suite) played guitar on that album. And we had some crazy guy playing drums, a union guy who was a real nut case. He was complaining all the time ’cause Norman wanted him to do an album in the time (five days!) that he normally took to do a single!” [Excerpt from ‘Kevin Gould: Early Pioneer of the UK Christian Music Scene’, an article by Tony Cummings featured in Cross Rhythms, 2nd March 2007]
