Description
For Him Who Has Ears to Hear is the debut album by the American singer, songwriter, and pianist Keith Green (October 21, 1953 – July 28, 1982), released on Sparrow Records in May 1977. The album was recorded live (with very little overdubbing) by Larry Emerine, Wally Duguid, Al Perkins, and Gordon Shryock at Studio 55 in Los Angeles, California; with Bill Maxwell and Keith Green producing. Strings arranged by Harlan Rogers. According to Sparrow Records, the album sold more than 250,000 copies in the first two years.
Featuring the classic “Your Love Broke Through” co-written by Keith Green, Todd Fishkind and Randy Stonehill (a song that actually first was offered to, and recorded by, Phil Keaggy on his 1976-album Love Broke Thru), “He’ll Take Care Of The Rest”, a song co-written by Keith Green and Wendell Burton, as well as “Easter Song” written by Annie Herring of 2nd Chapter of Acts fame (with additional verse by Keith Green).
Jamie Owens-Collins’ Growing Pains LP released in 1975 was the first gospel album Keith Green played on as a new believer. (The album includes the original recording of the Jamie Owens classic “The Victor”, a song Keith as well would record on his 1978-album No Compromise.) Keith Green is also featured on the multi-artist effort Firewind, a musical by The Talbot Brothers released in 1976, as well as Terry Talbot’s solo debut album No Longer Alone released the same year. Keith also appeares on the sophomore album by Good News, released on Sonrise Mercantile in 1977, as well as Confession
by Shiloh, released the same year. Keith Green would also appear on Wendell Burton’s debut album, released in 1978.
Keith Green will primarily be remembered as the prophetic voice in ccm, with a message that focused on obedience and commitment to God. He also happened to be a fine pianist and songwriter, no doubt due in part to his background in the secular music industry prior to his conversion. For Him Who Has Ears To Hear is one of ccm’s finest debuts – a Jesus music classic in an orchestrated keyboard rock, pop and ballads style comparable to artists like Billy Joel or Elton John. Filled with the presence of new-found joy, the album introduced such time-honored songs as «You Put This Love In My Heart», «Because Of You», «When I Hear The Praises Start» and of course the stirring ballad «Your Love Broke Through» (co-written with Todd Fishkind and Randy Stonehill). «He’ll Take Care Of The Rest» showed Keith’s humorous side. while «No One Believes In My Anymore (Satan’s Boast)» began the tradition of each album having a “devil song”. Closes with a vibrant cover of 2nd Chapter’s «Easter Song» with an additional verse written by Keith. Includes assistance from Bill Maxwell, Mike Deasy, Harlan Rogers, Danniebelle and several others.
