Mary Called Jeanie Greene, Jeanie Greene – Elektra EKS 74103.
It’s still Ladies’ Day. Jeanie Greene who writes her own material, usually with others, has got a little of that old-time religion here and so are a group of testifying side-men and women, all produced by Don Nix. This album has so much life, it’ll bowl jocks over. [Record World, September 18, 1971 (Album Product)]
Muscle Shoals and black gospel influences are spread all over this mainstream big-label release. Jeanie sings, wrote several of the songs («Yes, I Do Understand», «Peter, Put Away Your Sword», «Pre-Recognition» and «You Know Who You Are»), arranged a few others and contributes piano. She’s got this husky Janice Joplin growl that I wish we could have heard more of (I’d love to hear her do some rock and roll). The cover has a small cut-out window in the center revealing a picture of Jeanie on the inner sleeve. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
