Something I Believe In

Description

Something I Believe In is the third solo album by the American soul singer and songwriter Denny Correll, released on Myrrh Records in April 1982, a division of Word. The album was recorded at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and at International Automated Media in Irvine, California; with Bill Maxwell of Koinonia fame producing for I.A.M. Productions. Featuring Koinonia as backing band with backing vocals provided by Howard McCrary, Linda McCrary, and Phyllis St. James, as well as Andraé Crouch on “Too Many Lonely People”.

Wake up, Denny Correll fans! ‘Something I Believe In’ (Myrrh MSB-6699) is here. With sparkling brass and striking rhythm. this LP furthers Denny’s image as the blond-haired, blue-eyed soul singer from Southern California. The gutsy texture of Denny’s voice spreads across cultural boundaries like peanut butter on a whole wheat english muffin: it fills in all the holes.

Particularly noteworthy on this album are five songs. «Too Many Lonely People» is a God-directed query Christians cannot deny: “Lord sometimes I wonder where the unbelievers go/ to talk things out and share what’s on their mind/ Lord it makes me wonder how they make it on their own/ when I know that loneliness can be so unkind.” Denny concludes the obvious, which is that they need Jesus. He follows it up further with «You Can Depend on Jesus» as the last cut on side one.

The symbolism of Christ to the marriage ceremony and the husband/wife relationship in «Eternally (The Wedding Song)» is especially clear, while «The Promise», a comforting piece about His Word and how “He said He’d come for you,” shines on the second side. Speeding up the tempo a bit from the two latter songs is «Keepin’ M’y Eyes On You», which contains a terrific vocal mix in the chorus.

‘Something…’, Dennys third Christian LP, was produced by Denny along with Bill Maxwell, who also works extensively with Andrae Crouch and Keith Green. There is a hint of the Maxwell flair, but the product is as individual to Denny as is an Andrae LP to a Green one. Studio players included L.A. super-sessionmen Abraham Laboriel, Hadley Hockensmith (who also co-wrote with Denny and brother Tim Correll on a few songs) and absolutely excellent percussion by Alex Acuna, Daryl Burch, and Bill Maxwell.
