Description
B.J. Thomas in Concert is a gospel album by the American pop singer B.J. Thomas, released on MCA Songbird in 1980, manufactured by MCA Records. The album was recorded by Jack Joseph Puig and Malcolm Harper live at Dallas Convention Center Little Theater in Dallas, Texas; with Chris Christian producing. Edited and mixed by Puig and Jimmy Burch.
B.J. Thomas is backed by a band consisting of Carl Greeson on keyboards, Shane Keister on synthesizer, Byron Paul and Pat Vines on guitars, Sonny Garrish on steel guitar, John Francis on bass and Richard Gates on drums. Horns provided by Denis Solee, Dennis Good, Don Sheffield, Keith Adkins, Pete Brewer, Randy Lee, Robert Eidenier, and Steven Howard.
Recorded last July in Dallas, this is B.J.’s first-ever live album. The performances are typically excellent B.J. Thomas style (with a little overdubbing help). Thomas demonstrates his vocal prowess as he sails through several songs from his For the Best album (no songs from his Myrrh albums are included) and a few of his pop hits including «Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head» and «Mighty Clouds of Joy». Also included is Paul (“Do Right“) Davis’ «Hallelujah, Thank You Jesus».
A special moment on the disc is when B.J. gives his Christian testimony, describing his road to Christ. Well recorded and mixed by producer Chris Christian. (Best cuts: «Nothing Could Be Better», «Mr. Businessman», «Hallelujah, Thank You Jesus».) [CCM (Records – What’s New), November 1980]
