Description
At the Door is the third album by the American westcoast band The Wall Brothers, released on Greentree Records in February 1977. The album was recorded by James Goss and Stan Dacus at Mark Five Studio “B” in Greenville, South Carolina; with Goss producing. Mixed by Bob Clark at Great Circle Sound in Nashville, Tennessee.
Lance DeMers was the drummer and primary songwriter for The Wall Brothers Band from 75 to 78, and his friend Dennis Holt (later of The Archers and A.D. fame) replaced him when DeMers moved to New York where he became a part of the Phil Keaggy Band.
This is the third album released by The Wall Brothers and sees the group developing their combination of west coast smooth music and fantastic vocal harmony work. In a lot of ways this is fairly typical ’70s Jesus Music and to 21st century ears can sound a little twee in places so the recording of the children laughing and playing on the opening of «Little Children» immediately rings warning bells. But don’t worry, the album soon settles down so «I Can Depend On You» has a touch of Hall & Oates about it and then the band starts firing on all cylinders on the funky «Since The Day I Was Born». This band are great when they’re funky but then there is another sensitive side to them with ballads like «It’s A Miracle» and «Now We’re One» which still maintain that distinctive west coast sound. Overall, it’s a shame that this very good band have become Jesus Music obscurities but then it’s nothing that a CD re-release programme couldn’t solve. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, May 2010]
