Description
Footprints on the Water is an album by the British pop/rock combo Solid Rock Band, released on Chapel Lane in 1979, as the label’s first effort, catalogue number RWA 1. (Chapel Lane was a newly established independent British label releasing superlative – and mostly cutting edge – albums by Christian artists.) The album was recorded August 1979 at Chapel Lane Studios in Hereford, England; with Andy Kidd producing for Chapel Lane Productions. Solid Rock Band (S.R.B.) was a part of Salvation Army Citadel in Gloucester, England.
The band features Colin Fletcher on guitar and vocals, Stuart ‘Spud’ Ellsmore on guitar, vocals, and trumpet, Cliff Matthews on keyboards and vocals, Julian Brand on bass and vocals, and Roger Severn on drums, percussion, trumpet, vocals, and keyboards. The album as well features Terry Evans on saxophone and flute and Chris Priest on trombone.
Competent male UK outfit with smooth spacious Glad-like harmonies leading the way on a number of styles, including hard arena rock («What If He Came Today»), horn-inflected disco («Tell Me Jesus») and retro rock with a Buddy Holly twist («Rocking Preacher»). «Sign Of The Times», «Face To Face» «Roundabout» are all pleasant soft easy acoustic ballads, sometimes touched with watery electric guitar reminiscent of Bread. Synthetic tom-toms turn up on a couple tracks. The closing dynamic song «Very Good Friend» ranks up there with best of Glad. Gate-fold cover. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
