Description
The self-titled and sole album by the American rock band Look Up was released on CBS Records in 1986. Look Up was actually Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart incognito making an attempt to break into the mainstream music market. The album was produced by Mylon LeFevre, Joe Hardy, as well as Ed DeGarmo and Dana Key of DeGarmo & Key Band.
Mylon and the band recorded a cover of “Love Is All You Need”, a song originally recorded by DeGarmo & Key Band on their album This Ain’t Hollywood released in 1980 (the song was actually co-written with Mylon LeFevre who also provided background vocals). Look Up also includes a hi-tech cover of “Peace Begins Within”, a song featured on Mylon LeFevre’s solo debut album released on Cotillion Records back in 1970. Among the guest musicians to appear on Look Up is Dave Perkins, Earth, Wind and Fire lead vocalist Philip Baily, Kerry Livgren (of Kansas fame), and Jimmy Jamison (Survivor).
While Mylon and Broken Heart were beginning work on Sheep In Wolves’ Clothing in 1984, he inked a deal with CBS Records (separate from their agreement with Myrrh Records) to record a mainstream album. Sheep In Wolves Clothing and the CBS album were actually recorded at the same time. Mylon said, “Depending what side of the lyric fence they fell on, that’s how we decided which album to put them on.” “It’s a Christian album, but you really have to know the Word to know it. CBS ain’t gonna know it. Every song on there – every note on there – is played by born again, spirit-filled Christians. We had a good time making the record. It’s an anointed record and it’s got a good message, but it’s very shallow. We really avoided certain words and phrases, you know. It’s just about themes,” he expounded to CCM Magazine in the March 1986 issue.
A Broken Heart by any other name is still… Well, you know. Mylon & Co’s CBS album differs from his other recent projects in two key areas – or maybe it should read DeGarmo & Key areas since D&K figured in significantly on this album as co-producers, co-writers, and singer/players.
The first area is the songwriting which wisely espouses a Christian point of view on the world rather than the usual “inside talk for the flock.” The second is the production and sound which sort of seems like Synthesized Southern Swamp Rock. Or something. Mylon and the boys have invested a lot of energy into a real high-tech live sound, so it’s inevitable that those elements would start showing up in recorded form. Maybe it’s just those digital drums that drive me nuts…
‘Look Up’ is a good record, though – essential for any Mylon fan and very worthwhile in the grand scheme of things for anyone who stumbles onto the album “by chance.” [Thom Granger, CCM, February 1987]
