Let’s Join Together

Description

Let’s Join Together is the debut album by the British singer and songwriter Kevin Gould, released in the UK on Key Records in 1974. (Also released on Duif Platen in Netherlands with a separate lyric sheet in Dutch enclosed.) The album was recorded by Gerry Kitchingham at R.G. Jones Studios in London, England; with John Pantry producing. Featuring a session band consisting of John Pantry on piano, Idris Jones on guitar, and a rhythm section consisting of Nick Ryan on bass and Mike Wade on drums.

Kevin’s high-pitched voice takes a little getting used to and comes across as sort of a British version of Benny Hester. His first album on the Key label turned out to be his best, providing a pleasant mix of rock’n’roll, pop, folk and country. Kevin has written some intriguing song titles here, including «Dai», «Today I Walked A Million Miles», the hard-rocking «Soap Box Opera» and «Pity The Poor Revolutionary», the latter enhanced with bubblegum organ and a quasi-reggae beat. Quite a bit of variety here, ranging from the tough mid-tempo electric blues-rock growl of «Born Again News» to kickin’ country («Mary Mary» and «Higher Power») to the spacious Phil Spector-ish pop-rock of «Smile, Jesus Loves You». Rich dreamy synthesizer backing on several of the songs. Produced by the ubiquitous John Pantry, who also provides piano. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
