Chalice – Sojourning

Description

Sojourning is the sophomore album by the American pop group Chalice, released on StarSong Records in 1979, distributed by Tempo. The album was recorded and mixed by Andy DeGanahl at Bee Jay Recording Studios in Orlando, Florida; with George Atwell producing. (DeGanahl and Atwell as well recorded and produced Petra’s soft-rock album Washes Whiter Than released the same year, another band recently signed to StarSong Records.)

Chalice features Jeanne Joiner, Wally Joiner, Steve Whang, and Billy Hires (both Wally Joiner and Billy Hires were former members of the Florida based group Manna), and is backed by a session band featuring producer George Atwell on keyboards, Chalice member Wally Joiner on acoustic guitar, Joel Balin on acoustic and electric guitars, Chip Meyers on bass, and Randy Nichols on drums and percussion.

Trivia: The album includes “Yodelluia,” the first praise song using authentic Swiss yodelling.

For those who enjoy the late-70s style of 2nd Chapter Of Acts, an equal delight awaits in Chalice’s Sojourning. You can hear similarities all through the LP, not only in the precise vocal harmonies but also in the songwriting and musical arrangements (approaching flat-out imitation on the lively sax-backed «Fly Away»). Overall a polished yet vibrant soft rock style, sometimes lightly string orchestrated ala Mansion Builder or Roar Of Love, with respectable electric guitar presence throughout. The yodeling diversion «Yodelluia» may not be up to standard, but songs like «My Eyes Are Open» with its dreamy airborne flute-backed acoustic mood more than make up for it.
