Description
Mmhmm is the fourth full-length album by the American pop-punk band Relient K, released on Gotee Records in November 2004, distributed in the US by EMI CMG Distribution. The album was recorded by Joe Marlett, assisted by Dave Salley and Michael Modesto, at Dark Horse Studios in Franklin and s-s-Studio in Spring Hill, Tennessee; with Mark Lee Townsend and band member Matt Thiessen producing. Additional engineering by Mark Lee Townsend. Additional dubs at Malone College in Canton, Ohio. Mixed by JR McNeely, assisted by Mat5t (a.k.a. Matt Weeks), at Sound Kitchen in Nashville, Tennessee; except tracks 2, 3, and 6 mixed by Tom Lord-Alge at South Beach Studios in South Beach, Florida. All songs written by band member Matthew Thiessen. Upon the release of Mmhmm, the group signed with Capitol Records in October.
The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 15 and sold more than 50,000 copies in its first week. The album also topped the Christian Albums chart for five weeks. The album was certified Gold (500,000 copies sold) by the RIAA in 2005. It won the 2006 Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year at the 37th GMA Dove Awards.
Relient K features Matt Thiessen on guitar, acoustic piano, keyboards, percussion, and lead vocals; Matt Hoopes on guitar and background vocals; Brian Pittman on bass; and Dave Douglas on drums and background vocals.
What’s not to like about Relient K? On this fourth album, hot on the heels of the rather wondrous ride that was ‘Two Lefts Don’t Make A Right…’ the power pop punks have upped the ante with a mixture of tongue-in-cheek fun («My Girl’s ex-Boyfriend») and reflection («Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been») which never dips in quality and credibility. Helmed by the ridiculously talented and tasteful Mark Townsend, this set will have the likes of Busted and McFly crying into their Sunny D’s. Turn it up loud and try not to stagedive off your bed.
