Description
A six-track CD-EP simply entitled Extended Play is the debut effort by the British Europop/dance group Shine, released by Movation in 1999, marketed and distributed in Europe by Alliance Music. The album was recorded at Perfect Music Studios in Manchester, UK; with Zarc Porter of The World Wide Message Tribe fame producing and arranging.
Shine features Loretta Andrews, Nicola Rodgers, Hanne Pettersen, and Natasha Andrews.
Shine comes from the same stable as the World Wide Message Tribe, and, like their mentors, aim to produce music that will appeal to the chart-following school children of Manchester. The actual results differ somewhat from the Tribe’s more in-your-face dance sounds, with a laid-back, funky vibe pervading behind the predominantly female-lead vocals.
The vocals are very much the focal point of this recording, and they are certainly as well-performed as anything similar chart acts provide us with, even if this reviewer would like to see more extensive use of the harmony that the line-up provides.
Unfortunately, the music does not really live up to the standards I have come to expect from the Perfect music studio where this album was put together. The general feel is of a quality product, but there is very little in the songs to really grab the listener. To be fair to them, they are not far off from a lot of records that sell, but it is difficult to understand the buying habits of the single-buying public.
In all there are four tracks on offer here, two of which are also offered in remixed form, but there is little to make me want to pick the CD up again. Perhaps something with a little more energy would be a wise move to at least break the inertia and get listeners dancing. [James Stewart, The Phantom Tollbooth, 5/12/99]
