Authorized Unauthorized Bootleg

Description

Authorized Unauthorized Bootleg is an eight-track CD-EP by the American singer and songwriter John Austin, independently released on Twitch Records in July 1994.

Having broken on to the musical scene in 1992 with The Embarrassing Young, Austin had a young, hopeful label and a brilliant, accomplished producer behind him. The album yielded two well-received radio singles and critical acclaim. However, Austin’s producer, Mark Heard, died that summer of complications from a heart attack, and on the eve of an international tour, Austin was jumped in Chicago by a street gang. His elbow was smashed, and the tour canceled. His label, Glasshouse, dissolved soon after, and Austin was left without a contract, without insurance, and with a large medical bill.

Faced with these set-backs, Austin started from the ground up, first with this stripped down 8-song EP entitled Authorized Unauthorized Bootleg. The tracks were recorded and mixed by Newton Carter of Vigilantes of Love at Lyndon Ketterman’s house in Kansas City on one 72 hour day in June 1994. All songs written and performed by John Austin except the Mark Heard penned «Go Ask The Dead Man» (originally recorded by Heard on his sole iDEoLA release, Tribal Opera). Additional guitar provided by Newton Carter.
