Description
Bloomshine! is the sole album by the American alternative rock band Sunny Day Roses, released on Marathon Records in 1996. The album was recorded by Miro Svetinsky with band member Jeff Elbel of Farewell to Juliet fame producing. Mixed by Svetinsky and Elbel at Mirolab in Bellflower, California. Arranged and performed by Sunny Day Roses. Bass tracks performed by Steve Oberg, except for “Pop” and incidental bass, performed by Chris Edwards. Andrew Carter appears courtesy of the Aunt Bettys and Elektra Records. Chris Scott appears courtesy of Precious Death and Metro One Records.
Sunny Day Roses is Suki Chaney on vocals, Jeff Elbel on guitar and vocals, Lewis Richey on guitar, and Jonathan Edwards on drums.
Relaxed Californian rock from this female-fronted four-piece. A bit REM, a bit Counting Crows, even a touch Cranberries (although distinctly less Irish!). Cool, choppy riffs and carefully understated lead work from Lewis Richley and Jeff Elbel underlying Suki Chaney’s mellow vocal delivery. Intelligent lyrics deal with emotional and spiritual matters in an uncliched fashion. Bizarrely, all the tracks have single syllable titles such as «Cross», «Blue» or «Dig». The bass chair is filled for the most part by Steve Oberg, a job he does very well indeed and the band would do well to hire him on a more permanent basis. A bevy of natty little instrumental interludes and hidden tracks serve to spice up this already tasteful dish. [Andy Long, Cross Rhythms, December 1997]
