Breakaway

Description

Breakaway is the debut album by the Canadian alternative rock band Quickflight, released on Tunesmith Records in 1980. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed during the Summer of 1980 by Ron Obvious at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, Canada; with the band co-producing.

Quickflight is a hot new heavy-rock band from Canada. The sound borders on New Wave, but is not as frenetic. Ric deGroot’s synthesizers accent these bouncy tunes about life in today’s world.

Lyrically somewhat subtle from a Christian standpoint, the songs on ‘Breakaway’ address the problems of modern society, including the world situation. For example, «Modern Romans» makes reference to last April’s attempted rescue of the American hostages in Iran: “Helicopters spinnin’/ through the desert scene/ Off to save the children/ captives of a dream.”

Intelligent lyrics, musical proficiency and very strong production values add up to make Quickflight’s debut an auspicious one.

(Best cuts: «Between the Lines», «Breakaway», «Pink Shirts») [CCM, January 1981]

Christian music’s hallowed response to quirky synth-driven rock of artists like Gary Numan and The Cars. These Canadians were one of the first on the new wave scene with Ric de Groot behind the keys, Pete Cordalis on lead guitar, Doug Giesbrecht on bass, Gary Hendricks on drums and Mike King on rhythm guitar. All five share in the song-writing which includes such classic titles as «Pink Shirts», «Atheist», «Modern Romans» and «Shuttle» (“I’m boarding my shuttle going to leave this base, light speed forward ‘til I see your face”). From the heyday of the gutsy Tunesmith label. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
