Potter’s Clay

Description

The self-titled album by the Canadian folk-pop group Potter’s Clay was released on Today Recording in 1972 (??). The album was engineered by Pete Houton at Toronto Sound in Toronto, Canada; with Lloyd Smith producing. Featuring covers of Andrae Crouch’s “Keep On Singing“, and Ralph Carmichael’s “New 23rd“.

Potter’s Clay features Joyce Kido, Muriel LeBreton, Brian Koehn, Alan Hart, and Doug MacKenzie (later of Simeon and McKenzie-Prokop Band fame). Group members Hart and MacKenzie also play rhythm and lead guitars on the album, respectively. As well featuring producer Lloyd Smith on piano and a rhythm section consisting of Andy Afflick on bass and Nick Kent on drums.

Charming sunshine pop, folk-rock and ballads album from three-guy two-girl Canadian group. If you have a fondness for groups like Free Design then you’ll undoubtedly take delight in original songs like «Gardener Of Eden», «Key Of G», «Hey There Mister Morning» and «You Showed The Way», all of which have catchy melodies and layers of groovy soaring harmonies that are sure to sweep you away. A notch behind but still sufficiently moving are renditions of «You’ve Got A Friend», «God So Loved» and «Peace And Love». Only a couple lesser MOR tracks of the Crouch/Carmichael variety. Pleasant electric sound throughout that includes rhythm and lead guitars, bass, drums and piano, without any strings or horns. Best album by far on this small Canadian Christian label, also home to The Carpenter’s Union and Power & Light Co. Member, songwriter and lead guitarist Doug McKenzie’s name adorns many Canadian Jesus music albums. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
